Why Families Should Make Annual Eye Exams a Priority

Annual eye exams are essential to living a healthy lifestyle. As a kid, I used to dread going to the doctor’s office for an eye exam! I began wearing glasses in the fourth grade, and used to fear that my mother would be told that my eyesight had worsened. Glasses were thick back then and styles of frames were extremely unflattering – I really didn’t want to wound up with a pair of glasses worse than the atrocious ones I already had. For me at that time in my life, it was all about looking my best.

Needless to say, my perception of eye exams has changed dramatically over time. Nowadays, I look forward to my annual eye exam! I now understand that it’s not so much about “looking good” as it is about having a specialist perform the proper tests to ensure that my eyes are okay. As I now see it, annual eye exams are about safeguarding the health of my eyes in order to have healthy vision throughout my lifetime.

There is lots of talk about the importance of healthy eating and exercising. Unfortunately, annual eye exams do not get the same amount of buzz. Recently Think About Your Eyes surveyed members of national fitness center chain Life Time Fitness, and found that some gym-goers neglect their eye health despite being very conscious of their body health and fitness.

Having healthy eyes is right up there on the same level of importance having a healthy heart and the skin’s protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Yet, no one really talks about the many benefits of having your eyes examined by a professional on a yearly basis.

Now that I am a mom, I have to look out for my kids’ eye health just as I do my own. In this day and age of technology where staring at screens in (and out) the classroom is the norm, I want to ensure that my kids have the healthiest eyes possible. That is why I waste no time in scheduling their annual eye exams. Any potential problems detected by the eye care professional can be dealt with right away and keep my kids’ eyes healthy during their school years and beyond.

Even though it doesn’t get the fanfare that it should, it really is crucial for everyone – young and old – to get annual eye exams. It is part of the top healthy lifestyle habits that families should practice if they want to achieve and maintain total overall health. It is no secret that blurry vision or other eye health issues can develop as time goes by. It is best to begin taking care of your family’s eye health now – and continue to care for them – to guarantee healthy eyes for life for those you love.
