“I’m too old”

“I don’t have the time.”

“That ship has sailed.”

“My life is too complicated now.”

“I can’t do that anymore—it’s too late for me.”

Have you ever had a thought of an idea or a dream that you have always wanted to accomplish, only to be met with opposing thoughts convincing you that you can no longer do it?  Have you ever had a time when you came across someone–personally or otherwise—who had achieved some things in their life that you wish you had, and when you began to encourage yourself that you can still make it happen, you hear “the voice of reason ” telling you to face the “reality ” that such achievement is not possible? Or maybe you’ve had a time when you shared a dream with someone else, only for them to laugh it off, disregard it, or launch into a laundry list of reasons of why it can’t happen; in which after a while we start to believe them.

Every one of us has a dream or goal that we’ve always wanted to fulfill. Whether it’s professional, personal, or otherwise, we all have a “mental list” stored in our minds of things we would like to do in this life. Unfortunately, most times the list remains exactly what it is—mental. We tell ourselves (or someone else tells us) to be realistic:  that we’ve waited too long, that our dreams are childish, and that due to our current life’s situations, it is much too late to even bother trying.

That is the reason why I love this week’s Music Monday song, “Future” by Musiq Soulchild. The lyrics are strong and direct:  stop lying to yourself, stop letting others lie to you, and go after what you want in life. The song serves as a reminder to ignore the negativity that you may encounter from others—and even the voices of doubt and fear in your own mind. It is also a reminder to hold on to your dreams — that it is never too late to pursue them. You are in control of your own future.

hold on to your dreams

“I promise you can get it

But in order for you to get it you gotta be in it

And once you’re in it you can win it

Because whatever you want it’s all up to you”

hold on to your dreams.

  • Your post hits home… many times I have had those exact thoughts. And even now, as I’ve decided to move my dream forward… I sometimes wonder if I made the right decision. But I move forward, because all in all I enjoy every minute of it. Thanks for reminding us what is really important.

    • Greetings Victoria! I am glad that you enjoyed this post and this Music Mondays selection, and I am so happy to hear about your strides to press forward in life! Kudos to you! I know that it can be a challenge sometimes, but the rewards are so very much worth it! 🙂 ~thank you so much for sharing here with me–keep rising and shining! 🙂

  • Good day, Melisa!

I loved this post! The meaning behind it I can certainly relate too. I’ve been told those exact things concerning my desire to be a published author and writer. For the longest time, I believe the lies, and my dream lied dormant waiting for me to take hold of it because of those lies.

Like it seems to do for you, music has always inspired me into action. That’s why I can appreciate this post and Musiq’s song here. I hadn’t heard of it before, so I’m glad that you turned me on to it. Thanks Chica! 🙂 Thank you for the inspirational post as well. All the best to you.

    • Greetings Deeone~and welcome! 🙂

Yes I too have experienced the same thing–believing the lies that either I was feeding myself or others were feeding to me, and as a result I put my true dreams on the back-burner in order to “go with the regular flow” of life. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I realized what was happening and began to change my mindset. A lot of that realization and change happened due to my love for and the power of music.

I truly appreciate your kind words and compliments, and I wish you all the best as well! ~Thank you so much for commenting! 🙂
