Unfortunately, I know all-too-well how taxing it can be to manage bladder leakage while aging. That is, unless you know the right steps to take.

Some loss of bladder control is a natural part of the aging process – there’s no way around it. It’s just one of those things that we must live with. For women like me who have had children, it can be worse.

However, there is a silver lining. By putting the right practices and habits into place, bladder leakage can be put under control. That’s right: the loss of full bladder function does not have to take over your life, or prohibit you from feeling confident or doing the things that you love.

Here are five simple steps you can take to manage bladder leakage as you get older:

.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

One of the most important factors that can help manage bladder leakage is maintaining healthy and nutritious diet. A diet high in fruits and veggies, as well as drinking lots of water, can help to keep your all body’s functions running smoothly.

One of the best ways to get the process underway is by cleaning out your refrigerator and pantry. Try making a green smoothie for breakfast, or a bowl of salad for lunch. These small changes will make a big difference.

Exercise Regularly

Nothing does more to help manage bladder leakage while aging than exercise. Experts recommend at least 45 minutes of exercise three times per week. If you can’t hit the gym, create an exercise routine to do at home, or before/after work. Go for a walk, or take up an active hobby like skating or kickball.

Additionally, kegels are a great way to slow the natural process of bladder control loss. These discreet exercises can be done anywhere, anytime – from sitting at your work desk, during your commute, or watching TV and relaxing at home.

Minimize Stress

Stress can wreak havoc on the body – and the area of bladder control loss is no exception. If you’re serious about becoming a healthier person all-around, while also minimizing the occurrence of bladder leaks, get serious about fighting stress.

Try yoga. Take a few moments out of your day to meditate or otherwise break away from your busy life to-do’s. Get out in nature, or read a good book. Anything that takes your mind away from the stresses of daily life.

Wear the right clothing

Ever woman dreads being that woman known for wearing “mom jeans.” However, wearing skinny jeans or other type of tight pants can place added pressure on your bladder and increase the possibility of a bladder leak.

Look for a “win-win” solution to your attire. Pants that are form-flattering, yet fit comfortably in the stomach and pelvic areas are your best bet.

Use Protection

You wear menstrual pads as protection during your period, right? The same thing applies to protecting yourself against bladder leaks. Because they are unpredictable and the leakage amount is oftentimes uncontrollable, it is best to have a line of defense in place to feel confident and comfortable at all times.

Depend® Silhouette Active Fit briefs are a perfect means of bladder leakage protection. Each brief has maximum absorbency and odor protection in a smooth, sleek, feminine design. Plus, the cotton-like fabric and modern rise fit allows for the ultimate discretion while moving and bending.

Getting older is a beautiful process, but it’s also a process of many adjustments as our bodies and functions change. The key is to live a full quality of life as much as possible and for as long as possible.

While issues such as bladder control loss are inevitable, taking the right steps to manage it can ensure the continuance of a lifestyle that is healthy and happy.
