One of the most fun activities my family did last summer was exploring the many ways that science can be fun through the free online activities offered by the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI)! And this summer, MSI returns and invites families to explore the science behind popular carnival games and activities!

 .

Now in its third year, the MSI Summer Brain Games program gives kids the opportunity to participate in eight weeks of fun and easy science experiments designed to combat the “summer brain drain.” All for free and all in the comfort of home!

 .

Registered families receive weekly emails with detailed instructions on how to build and play eight different carnival activities. Activities can be easily done (with some adult supervision) using items found around the house or inexpensively purchased. There’s also a MSI Summer Brain Games Program free activity guide available for download at http://www.msichicago.org/summerbrain.

 .

During this year’s program, families will learn about pressure by launching stomp rocket daredevils, become an engineers and design fast racing boats, construct a carnival tent from newspapers and much more!

Here’s the best part: every family that registers online for the MSI Summer Brain Games Program will receive a FREE admission voucher to visit the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, along with discount coupons for the Museum store and restaurant!

 .

If you and your family have never visited the Museum, take a look at what’s in store for you!

.The science carnival activities and games from the MSI Summer Brain Games program can serve as a great theme for a child’s party or backyard family barbecue this summer! More so, it’s a great way for families with kids of all ages to stay active and enthused as they learn more about the world around them.

“Learning that happens out of school has a tremendous impact on children because it reinforces concepts they learn in school without it feeling like more school time,” said Bryan Wunar, the Museum’s director of community initiatives. “With Summer Brain Games, thousands of kids and their families join us to experiment, learn and have fun together. Their enthusiasm shows there’s a definite need and desire for educational activities that engage kids during the summer months.”

 .

Here’s what previous participants said:

“Doing Summer Brain Games together as a family was fun, and trying the activities together made it worthwhile when the kids got to see that it works! The best thing my oldest said was that she learned the value of team work.”

“We do look at science a little differently now. We’re not so intimidated by it, and we think it’s a fun way to bring the family together to have a little quality time and fun.”

“I teach a summer engineering class to 4th and 5th graders. It was a plus to be able to use your guide as part of our teams’ research.”

 .

I’ve already registered my family for this year’s program – we can’t wait to start!!

This year’s MSI Summer Brain Games program is sponsored by Jewel and runs June 16 through August 11, 2014. Families can register for free at http://www.msichicago.org/summerbrain.
