If there’s one lesson you learn when you’re expecting, it’s that there’s almost no end to the products available for babies and new moms today. How do you know which items are must-haves and which ones can be skipped? What are the essentials you need to purchase before your baby arrives? What should definitely get put on your registry? To help answer these questions, here’s a look at seven commonly accepted necessities that every new mom needs to have on hand before it’s time to bring her firstborn home:

Place for Your Baby to Sleep: Your newborn can sleep in the crib from day one, but a lot of moms prefer to use a bassinet for the first several weeks. Whatever you choose, have it set up and ready before your baby comes. What’s more, because you’ll eventually need a room for your baby either way, go ahead and have the eventual room ready, too. Take the time you have before the baby comes to decorate the nursery as a fun project! Choose a theme or color, a crib bedding set, furniture and accessories to make your babies room the best place for them to sleep.

.

Safe Car Seat: From your first drive home from the hospital to the many trips with your baby you’ll make over the following weeks and months, you’ll need a safe way to bring your baby in the car with you while traveling. “U.S. law requires that your child sit in a car seat while riding in any car — even on the way home from the hospital,” says Baby Center. “For a newborn, you have two choices: a rear-facing infant seat designed to be used until your baby weighs around 20 pounds, or a convertible seat, which can face rear or front, designed to be used by both babies and older children.”

Diapers, Wipes and Changing Pads: Expect to change a lot of diapers in your child’s first few years of life, starting from the earliest days when you bring him/her home. Whether you choose to use disposable or cloth diapers, have them ready before your baby arrives — this is one baby-gear item you can count on needing constantly. Other important items are wipes, changing pads (with disposable underpads or covers) and a place to throw dirty diapers until you have time to take out the trash.

7 Must-Have Items For Every New Mom aNursing Gear: If you’re planning to breastfeed your baby in the beginning, you’re making him/her part of the 79 percent of newborn infants who start feeding on breast milk. No matter how long you choose to continue feeding your baby this way, you’ll likely need various pieces of equipment to make the process easier — a nursing pillow, for example, can make holding your baby more comfortable, and nursing pads can prevent too much leakage from getting on your bras and clothes. Other good ideas include nursing bras, nursing covers and potentially a breast pump, for maintaining your milk supply.

Baby Nail Scissors and/or Clippers: You’d be amazed at how quickly newborn nails can grow, not to mention how they can lead to injuries when your baby accidentally scratches himself/herself while asleep. For this reason, you’ll need to cut or clip your infant’s nails — a daunting task — and plan to put infant mittens on those infant hands until you do.

Baby Bathtub and Soap: Keeping your infant clean doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require a baby-specific wash as well as a baby tub, in order to keep your little one safe. “Your newborn will be getting sponge baths at first, then baths in an infant tub,” says Jessica Hartshorn from Parents Magazine.

Some Sort of Sling: Wearing your baby can be a wonderful way to sooth his/her nerves and encourage sleep. There are many different methods for baby-wearing today, from the Ergo to the Moby, so you may want to borrow a friend’s before committing to the kind you’ll buy. Having something ready to use is important, however, at least in terms of giving you more ways to calm your crying child.

Go to the baby section of any store, and you’ll see there are all kinds of products to purchase, preparing for your little one’s arrival — but remind yourself not all these items are necessary and stick to what you know you need first. Other products can add comfort and convenience to your post-baby life, but the above list covers some of the must-have items you’ll definitely need.
