Priorities. A taboo word when you are like me: a person of many hats, having a ton of things and people all vying for your attention and it all believes that it (or they) should have the number one spot. It is demanding, it is stressful, and it is downright draining.

It is something that I go through far too often. In fact, my life is so insanely busy that prioritizing is a must for me every day, all of the time. And not just the actual act of prioritizing, but making sure that with each and every time make the proper choices and place the right things first. ..

The best steps to prioritize your life  is to take emotions out of the equation—those of others as well as self. See, in order to truly prioritize, emotions cannot play a factor. Instead, it is more about taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, and weighing the pros and cons from every angle. Only when that process is done can decisions be made on what is most important.

Prioritize Your Life

Allow me to give you a personal example from my own life:

Prioritize Your Life

I have to travel to pick up my oldest daughter Rebel from college this weekend for Holiday break. Next week, the other three children will also begin their breaks. For the past couple of weeks, I have been severely ill. There were a whole host of engagements and meetings that I had committed to prior to me getting sick, plus I had not yet begun planning or preparing  for the Holidays. Usually whenever I fall ill, I push myself to honor my commitments and get everything done, but this time I chose differently. In my eyes, my number one priority was getting well in time to travel to get my daughter from school, and remaining healthy for the duration of the kids’ Holiday break. So because of that, everything else took a backseat for me—I cancelled everything that was scheduled, sent my regrets to everyone for events and kept myself in bed, placing all of my focus of getting better..

I had to take my emotions out of the situation. See, one thing that I hate is to not honor a commitment for something if I have already given my word that I would attend or do, and I really feel bad to hurt others’ feelings. I most certainly do not want people to think that they cannot count on me. Above that, I was excited about many of the things that were on my schedule. But I could not allow any of those emotions to be a factor in deciding what I should do. My health comes first, and my family definitely comes first. Everything else would work itself out or be just fine without me..

Why am I saying all of this? During the Holiday season, it can be very easy for things to become hectic, and for the pressures from work, family, friends, etc. to accelerate in such a way that life can really start to feel like it is spinning out of control. This feeling can take a toll on your mind, health, and overall well-being. When this feeling starts to creep in, it is important to take a moment to stop and set some priorities. Remove the emotions out of the equation and focus solely on the bigger picture. That way, a clear determination can be made on the things (and people) that are most important.

Prioritize Your Life.

Setting priorities in life is never easy—especially when life gets frantic. But with a little work and a lot of patience and strength, it can certainly be done.

  • I’m feeling like that now with the holidays. I left the extremely picky people last and now I’m down to the wire and I’m stressed. Perhaps this year they won’t get gifts. Perhaps their inability to be appreciative will be reassessed after I explain that my Christmas joy will not be stripped because of some gifts.

    • Greetings Karla! I certainly know how you feel. To me, the gift search and selection process is definitely the most stressful part of the Holidays. I think a good thing to do–especially when it gets down to the wire–is to get gift cards. You can never go wrong with them! Since I do gift cards so much during the year, I try to do actual gifts for the holidays, but I’m seriously considering doing gift cards for the Holidays, too. Like you said, nothing should take away your Holiday spirit or joy during this season! Hang in there–things will get better! 🙂 ~Thank you so very much for sharing here with me–I truly appreciate it! 🙂

  • I am super emotional. I often decide not to do things based on how I’m feeling and while I know that it’s not right, it’s been my default for so long it’s hard to shake the habit. Thanks for this post!

    • Greetings T. Espi! You are very welcome! I know exactly how you feel because I used to be the same way for so long. It was something that I had to get myself out of doing because I realized that it was causing more harm than good for me. Ever since I made the changes, my choices changed for the better. It can be tough, but you can do it! Hang in there! 🙂 ~I truly appreciate you sharing here with me! 🙂
