If you wake up early during the week, you probably want to sleep in on the weekends, but you’ll benefit more from maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Try to wake up and go to bed at the same times every day.

Manage Your Light Exposure

Natural light is good for the body and soul, but artificial lights are known to interrupt sleep patterns. Two hours before bed, start limiting your exposure to artificial lights, especially the blue light emissions from electronics.

.

Stay Physically Active

Exercise helps you stay awake during the day and will drive you to bed in the evening. Even if you can’t make it to the gym or go for a long run, just 10 minutes of daily exercise might improve your sleep patterns.

Manage Your Diet

In this case, managing your diet just means watching when you eat and drink. Super rich or fatty foods close to bedtime will keep you awake. Additionally, alcohol before bed might make you sleepy, but it will likely interrupt your sleep pattern.

.

Clear Your Mind

Do you ever find yourself lying awake in bed processing the day or navigating residual stress? Learning to manage your thoughts and clear your mind before bed can help you be calm and rest easy.

Is your bedroom noisy? Is it too cold or warm? Is your bed comfortable? Can you effectively shut out light sources? If you aren’t comfortable in your sleeping area, you’ll have a hard time drifting into sleep. Take a little extra time and make it cozy.

.

Fall Back Asleep

It is completely normal for people to wake briefly during the night. For most sleepers, they’ll never remember the moment and just fall back asleep. If you’re having trouble doing so, try to clear your mind and focus on relaxation.

Limit Caffeine

It might be a no-brainer to avoid caffeine before bed, but you’d be surprised how a morning cup of coffee can affect you ten hours later. Understand your caffeine sensitivity and limit your intake if necessary.

Limit Napping

Having a short 15- or 20-minute afternoon nap can do wonders for that midday slump, but anything longer or more frequent can interrupt your nighttime sleep patterns. If you find yourself getting sleepy at the wrong times, take a walk or do the dishes to maintain your sleep schedule.

.

Keep an eye on the quality of your sleep and see what adjustments work for you. Try everything on the list, and when you discover what is most effective for you, stick with those changes! You’ll be on your way to quality sleep in no time.
